What is a Hospitalist?

Growing trends in health care are creating a more efficient hospital environment from patient care to the inner-workings of the system itself. Hospital Medicine – or the care of hospitalized patients – has grown significantly over the last few years with hospitalist (physicians who care for  hospitalized patients) doing their part to ensure the continued growth of success.

In 1996, the hospitalist model of care was introduced providing an alternate to the primary care physician model. Before the hospitalist model, primary care physicians managed their hospitalized patients; however their time during normal business hours was limited due to their outpatient practice responsibilities. Hospitalists now provide support for primary care physicians within the hospital setting, which allows primary care physicians to concentrate on delivering enhanced care to patients in their offices.

The Role of the Hospitalist
The shift to hospitalist care has been beneficial in almost every aspect of hospital operations. From the clinical side, hospitalists’ roles include patient admissions, conducting daily inpatient rounds, administering medications, helping with discharge planning and post-hospital follow-ups. During hospitalization the hospitalist also is a liaison of communication for patient and family.

Aside from patient care, hospitalists are valuable assets to the organization of hospital systems and operations. Hospitalists are an essential component of practice guidelines and protocol development. Their involvement includes teaching medical students, mentoring residents, research, the practice of hospital quality assurance. Since the creation of the hospitalist model, hospitalists have become an invaluable element in hospital systems. The hospitalist is most rapidly growing field in medicine, rivaling cardiology in size.
