Cancer Registry

Danville Regional Medical Center Cancer Registry maintains a complete database of information on all cancer cases diagnosed or treated here. Information gathered includes demographics which includes history of tobacco use and family history of cancer; staging which may include lab tests and imaging; treatment which includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy; and follow-up.

Reports are submitted to the State of Virginia Central Cancer Registry (a division of the Virginia Department of Health) every month and to a National Cancer Data Base once a year through the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The cancer registrar is also a data source for maintaining accreditation through the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Data from the registry can provide information for local studies by physicians when needed.

In 2013 a total of 468 new cases were recorded for the Danville area. The top cancer sites were breast, lung, prostate and colon.
