Center for Radiation Oncology
Located in a separate building across from the main entrance to DRMC, the Center for Radiation Oncology has been providing compassionate, convenient, high quality cancer care for over 14 years. Part of an accredited community oncology program through the American College of Surgeons, it is staffed by 5 radiation therapists, a nurse, dosimetrist, medical physicist, and board certified radiation oncology physician, they are able to provide cutting edge radiation therapy in a welcoming environment filled with smiles, refreshments and bakery goods close to home.
Services provided include external beam radiotherapy with a Varian Clinac 2300 which offers 6 and 18 MV photons, 6, 9, 12, 16 MeV electrons and multileaf collimation. The Pinnacle treatment planning system allows us to provide 3D conformal and fixed field multileaf collimation intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). The on board imaging device (OBI) allows both kV kV localization (such as for marker match localization after seed placement for prostate cancer) or kV CT localization.
Prostate brachytherapy is provided with low dose rate implants using Iodine-125 from Bard or Palladium-103 (Theraseed). We use in the operating room treatment planning with Nucleotron and stranded seeds to give you your best chance to get the radiation dose where you want it and destroy your cancer.
Intravenous (IV) radiation treatments are offered with Samarium-153 for cancer in the bones and Iodine-131 for thyroid cancer.
Stereotactic radiosurgery for brain disease is offered using cylinders and arcs with the BrainLab treatment planning system. This is a way to avoid brain surgery or treat diseases in which brain surgery is not a safe option with highly focused radiation. We can provide both the frame and even less invasive frameless options for this treatment.
We offer the opportunity to enroll on clinical trials through an affiliation with the Southeast Cancer Control Consortium, a National Cancer Institute sponsored Community Clinical Oncology Program. State of the art therapies to prevent cancer, treat it more effectively, and reduce the side effects caused by cancer treatment are offered to interested patients. This includes Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) trials, the largest research organization in the USA dedicated to treating patients more effectively with radiation.
