Making your home healthier doesn’t mean you have to spend tons of money on it, in fact, just some basic changes can improve the health of your home. Many studies suggest that the way you style and maintain your home have a great impact on your health. So if you are giving it a thought to make your home healthier then follow these quick fixes.
1. Turn Down the Thermostat at Night
The feeling of getting in a warm, cozy bed seems so relaxing and can get you through the day during winters, but turning the thermostat down can have a huge impact on your metabolism while sleeping. Researchers have found out that sleeping in a cooler room can cause your body to burn more calories than in a warm room. So turning down your thermostat or changing your sheets to light weighted linen can help you with it.
2. Some Household Products are Toxic
When shopping for cleaning products, look for alternatives to household chemicals and pesticides. However, if you must use them, use them with caution! Read the labels on them and follow the directions exactly as stated. Make sure once they are used, you store them in high locked cabinets in their original containers they come in.
3. Get House Dust Under Control
House dust intensifies allergies and contains more dangerous chemicals than you might even imagine. The solutions to overcome this issue are to replace your wall-to-wall carpeted home to wooden flooring, non-vinyl linoleum or tiles. But if you don’t want to spend so much then an economical solution is to use the old-fashioned elbow grease. Keep your house clean; vacuum it frequently especially by moving the furniture to get those dust bunnies.
Another important thing you should do to make your home healthier is to get your home tested. Radon and lead paint are serious hazards that one cannot afford to ignore. Lead poisoning can cause brain damage in children and developing fetus whereas, radon is a cancer that is caused by radioactive gas. Now what to check at home is the main question. The major source of lead at home comes from dust and old paint that forms when paint is eroded. Radon is a colorless and odorless gas that comes from the natural breakdown of rock and soil underneath your home.
5. Be Careful with Canned Foods and Plastic Bottles
A chemical found in plastic bottles and baby bottles called Bisphenol A and can cause serious damage to your health. It is also found in line metal products like canned food. Damage can occur on the prostate gland, brain, and is harmful for children, infants and fetuses. It is suggested to look for safer baby bottles made with either cloudy plastics or tempered glass. Avoid heating plastic food containers in microwave especially with cling wraps and most of all avoid using canned foods and start storing your food in either ceramic or glass containers.
